Crestron lighting control: dimmers, modules and sensors

Crestron lighting control covers the dimmers, switches, DIN rail modules, DALI and DMX interfaces and sensors that set scenes, schedules and daylight levels in homes and commercial buildings, including 230 V in-wall and in-ceiling models. You can buy them in Ireland from 1Install, an authorised Crestron Elite Partner, supplied on their own or installed and programmed.

Should I choose wireless dimmers or a central lighting panel?

Wireless dimmers and switches replace the existing switch or sit beside the light fitting, and talk to the system over infiNET EX, so they suit retrofits where no control cable can be run.

  • CLWI in-wall (230 VAC): the CLWI-DIMUEX universal phase dimmer, the CLWI-DIMUNEX with a neutral wire for low-wattage LEDs, the CLWI-DIMFLVEX 0-10V dimmer, and the CLWI-SWEX and CLWI-1SW2EX switches. Each takes up to six engravable buttons, in white or anthracite.
  • CLCI in-ceiling (230 VAC): the CLCI-DIMUEX dimmer, the CLCI-1SW2EX two-channel switch and the CLCI-1DIMFLV2EX 0-10V dimmer fit next to the fitting and accept a standard wall switch.

Central panels suit new builds and larger homes, where each circuit is wired back to a cabinet. The CLXI-2DIMU8 gives eight channels of 230 V universal dimming in a CAEN enclosure, and DIN rail modules such as the DIN-1DIMU4, DIN-4DIMFLV4 and DIN-8SW8 dim, 0-10V dim or switch circuits from a DIN-EN enclosure.

How do I control DALI, DMX and LED strip lighting?

  • DALI: the DIN-DLI is a DALI-2 certified interface for one loop of up to 64 devices in up to 16 groups, covering device types DT0 to DT8 Tc. It powers the loop and runs from Cresnet or PoE. Zum rooms use the ZUMMESH-JBOX-DALI or the ZUMNET-DIN-DLI instead.
  • DMX: the DIN-DMX-1UNIVERSE and DIN-DMX-2UNIVERSE are Pharos lighting playback controllers for timelines and scenes across 512 or 1,024 channels, and the DIN-SACN-DMX converts between sACN or Art-Net and DMX.
  • LED strips: the DIN-2LEDPWM8 drives two 12 to 24 VDC RGBW outputs with flicker-free PWM dimming, and the CLC-1LEDPWM-RGBW-EX mixes RGBW colour on four channels over infiNET EX.
  • Crestron fixtures: the DIN-GWDL gateway controls up to 64 Crestron and compatible light fittings in a Crestron Home system, or 85 with the DIN-GWDL-SPLTR.

Colour temperature can follow the sky outside: the GLS-LCCT SolarSync sensor measures daylight colour temperature and intensity from the roof.

What is Zum and when should I use it?

Zum is Crestron's lighting control for commercial rooms. Wireless devices pair and play, and Zum wired rooms are set up in the Zum app.

  • Zum Mesh wireless: J-Box load controllers, wall-box dimmers, keypads and battery sensors pair with each other with no control wiring, hubs or gateways. The occupancy and vacancy sensors run for ten years on the included battery.
  • Zum wired: Zum Link DIN rail and J-Box controllers connect to keypads and STEINEL presence detectors over RJ-45, and the sensors take power from the Zum Link bus.
  • Building level: the ZUM-HUB4 processor adds central management, scheduling and a time clock for up to 1,000 rooms, with BACnet for up to 9,000 preset objects. For a single space, the ZUMLINK-DIN-IO and ZUMLINK-JBOX-IO run schedules without a control system.

Zum works on its own or alongside a Crestron control system, touch screens, shading and HVAC.

What should I check when replacing a dimmer or lighting module?

  • Load type: universal dimmers such as the CLWI-DIMUEX, CLXI-2DIMU8 and DIN-1DIMU4 detect forward or reverse phase loads automatically. Crestron's Lighting Fixture Compatibility page lists fittings tested with its dimmers.
  • Ratings: the DIN-1DIMU4 handles 1150 W per channel and 2300 W per module at 230 VAC, with a 50 W minimum per channel for AC dimmable LED. The CLCI-DIMUEX handles 300 W/VA.
  • Wiring: the CLWI-DIMUNEX needs a neutral at the switch position.
  • Network: infiNET EX devices need a wireless gateway, and Cresnet modules need their ID and override settings restored.
  • Space: the DIN-1DIMU4 takes 12 DIN module spaces and the DIN-DLI takes 3, so check the enclosure.
  • Finish: match white or anthracite on CLWI devices.

Questions about Crestron lighting control: dimmers, modules and sensors

What is the difference between the CLWI-DIMUEX and the CLWI-DIMUNEX?

Both are universal phase in-wall dimmers for 230 VAC, compatible with forward and reverse phase loads, using infiNET EX wireless and taking up to six engravable buttons in white or anthracite. The CLWI-DIMUNEX connects to a neutral wire and is designed for low-wattage loads, especially LEDs. The CLWI-DIMUEX also accepts a third-party switch for remote dimming.

Do CLWI and CLCI devices need control wiring?

No control wiring is needed back to the control system, because they communicate over infiNET EX, a two-way RF mesh network on 2.4 GHz in which each powered device also passes commands on to others. They do need an infiNET EX wireless gateway in the system, and up to 100 infiNET EX devices can share one wireless network.

How much load can the DIN-1DIMU4 dim?

Each of its four channels is rated at 5 A, which is 1150 W at 230 VAC, and the module total is 10 A, or 2300 W at 230 VAC. Minimum load is 15 W per channel for incandescent and 50 W for magnetic low voltage or AC dimmable LED. Each channel detects the load type and selects forward or reverse phase automatically.

What is the CLXI-2DIMU8 used for?

It is an eight channel universal dimmer module for 230 V lighting, made up of two independent four channel dimmers with a dual or single feed. It dims LED, incandescent, magnetic and electronic low-voltage and 2-wire fluorescent loads, has an air-gap relay on every output, and installs in a CAEN or CAENIB enclosure with a CLTI terminal block sold separately.

Can Crestron control DALI lighting?

Yes. The DIN-DLI is a DALI-2 certified DIN rail interface that controls one DALI loop of up to 64 drivers in up to 16 groups, supports device types DT0 to DT8 Tc and supplies the loop power. It runs from Cresnet or PoE and talks to Crestron Home OS over Ethernet. Zum systems have their own DALI controllers.

Which Crestron occupancy sensor should I use?

The GLS-OIRLCL-C-CN combines PIR occupancy sensing and closed-loop daylight harvesting over Cresnet, covering 42 sq m from a 26 mm hole. For large open spaces, the GLS-ODT-C-CN and PoE powered CEN-ODT-C-POE use dual technology to cover up to 2,000 sq ft. The GLS-OIR-CSM-EX-BATT is battery powered and talks over infiNET EX.

What is the difference between Zum Mesh and Zum wired?

Zum Mesh devices, such as the ZUMMESH-JBOX-16A-LV and the battery sensors, communicate wirelessly and pair with each other directly, with no control wiring, hubs or gateways. Zum wired devices, such as the ZUMLINK-DIN-16A-LV and ZUMLINK-JBOX-20A, connect over Zum Link RJ-45 cabling, which also powers keypads and sensors. Zum wired rooms are set up in the Zum app.

Can Crestron lighting follow natural daylight?

Yes. The GLS-LCCT SolarSync sensor measures the colour temperature and intensity of daylight outdoors, so indoor lighting can be adjusted to match. It is IP67 rated, self-heating and connects over Cresnet. Daylight harvesting sensors, such as the GLS-OIRLCL-C-CN and the Zum daylight sensors, dim the lights when enough natural light reaches the room.

Why are some Crestron prices shown and others on request?

Where Crestron publishes an advertised price in Ireland, we show it, before VAT and including VAT. For other products Crestron asks dealers to give the price directly, so add them to your quote list and we will send a written quote.
