Crestron AV switchers and HDMI extenders

Crestron AV switchers and extenders route laptops, cameras and players to the right display and carry HDMI, USB and control signals over a single category cable, from 4x1 presentation switchers to 8x8 matrices and DM Essentials extenders. You can buy them in Ireland from 1Install, an authorised Crestron Elite Partner, supplied on their own or installed and programmed.

Which switcher suits my meeting room?

  • Presentation systems: the HD-PS401 (4x1), HD-PS402 (4x2) and HD-PS622 (8x2) combine automatic switching, 4K60 4:4:4 HDR scaling and an audio mixer with phantom-powered microphone inputs, and each output is mirrored on a DM Essentials output for a remote display. The HD-PS401 is designed to work out of the box.
  • AV switchers: the HD-MD4X1-4KZ, HD-MD4X2-4KZ and HD-MD8X8-4KZ switch 4K60 4:4:4 HDR sources with CEC device control and native Crestron control over Ethernet, and the 4x1 and 4x2 models switch inputs automatically.
  • Display control without a processor: the HD-MD2X1-8K switcher and the HD-CTL-101 pass up to 8K60 and turn the display on and off by schedule, occupancy or video sync, using CEC, RS-232, IR or relays.
  • All-in-one: the DMPS3-4K-250-C (8x2) and DMPS3-4K-350-C (9x4) combine a 3-Series control system, matrix switcher, scaling, a microphone mixer, DSP and an amplifier in 3U.

For a single display, a presentation system is usually the simplest choice. Matrix switchers suit rooms with several displays or a control system already in place.

How far can I extend HDMI, and over which cable?

DM Essentials extenders send 4K60 4:4:4 HDR video up to 40 m, or 1080p, WUXGA and 2K up to 70 m, over one CAT5e or better cable. The part number tells you what else travels with the video:

  • HD-TXC-4KZ-101 and HD-RXC-4KZ-101: HDMI with RS-232 and IR.
  • HD-TXCA and HD-RXCA: add stereo analogue audio and an optical audio return.
  • HD-TXU and HD-RXU: USB-C DisplayPort input with USB 2.0 and Ethernet.
  • Multi-input transmitters: the HD-TX-4KZ-201, 401 and 421-CHGR switch between two or four sources before the link.

The HD-EARC kit adds eARC audio return up to Dolby Atmos, over 70 m at 4K or 100 m up to 2K. DigitalMedia 8G+ transmitters and receivers, such as the DM-TX-4KZ-302-C and DM-RMC-4KZ-100-C, reach 100 m at 4K on DM Ultra cable and work with HDBaseT equipment.

How do I extend USB for cameras and peripherals?

USB cameras and UC soundbars often sit further from the room computer than a USB cable can reach.

  • USB-EXT-2: USB 1.1 and 2.0 at up to 480 Mbps over 100 m of CAT5e, with no drivers. Wall plate versions are available.
  • USB-EXT-3: USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gbps over 100 m of CAT6a or CAT7, with four USB-A ports at the far end and a Gigabit Ethernet pass-through.
  • USB-EXT-3S: a smaller USB 3.2 extender with a USB-C host port, three USB-A and one USB-C device port, RS-232 pass-through and 1-gang wall plate versions.
  • USB-SW-200 and USB-SW-400: let two or four USB-C computers share the same devices at up to 10 Gbps, switching automatically or by priority.
  • HD-CONV-USB-300: captures an HDMI source as uncompressed 1080p60 USB 3.0 video for streaming and conferencing software.

The HD-TXU and HD-RXU DM Essentials extenders also carry USB 2.0 at up to 300 Mbps alongside the video.

What should I check when replacing a switcher or extender?

  • Matching pairs: HD-RXU receivers take the HD-TXU series, and the HD-RX-4K-210-C works with all DM Essentials transmitters except TXU models.
  • Cable: DM Essentials needs CAT5e or better, USB-EXT-3 models need CAT6a or CAT7, and DM 8G+ reaches 100 m at 4K only on DM Ultra cable.
  • Power: a DM Essentials wall plate transmitter usually takes power over the link from a surface-mount receiver or switcher. A PW-2407WUL is needed only when both ends are wall plates.
  • Control: the HD-DA splitters and the HD-EXT-USB-2000-C need no programming, while matrix switchers and DMPS units are normally run by the control programme or .AV Framework.
  • Mounting: most units stand freely, surface mount or fix to a rack rail, while the HD-MD8X8-4KZ, HD-PS402 and HD-PS622 are 1U rack units.

Questions about Crestron AV switchers and HDMI extenders

What is the difference between the HD-PS401, HD-PS402 and HD-PS622?

All three are 4K60 4:4:4 HDR presentation systems with automatic switching, scaling, on-screen overlays and an audio mixer. The HD-PS401 has four HDMI inputs and one output, the HD-PS402 has four HDMI inputs and two outputs with a scaler each, and the HD-PS622 adds two DM Essentials inputs to six HDMI inputs, with two outputs, in a 1U chassis.

Do Crestron switchers need a control system?

Not always. The HD-PS401 presentation system is designed to work out of the box, the HD-DA distribution amplifiers need no programming, and the HD-MD2X1-8K and HD-CTL-101 can control a display without a control processor. The HD-MD8X8-4KZ, HD-MD4X1-4KZ and HD-MD4X2-4KZ offer native Crestron control over Ethernet, and the HD-MD8X8-4KZ works with 3-Series or later control systems.

How far can DM Essentials extenders send 4K video?

Up to 40 m for UHD and 4K, and up to 70 m for 1080p, WUXGA and 2K, over CAT5e or better cable. The HD-EARC kit reaches 70 m at 4K and 100 m up to 2K. For longer 4K runs, DigitalMedia 8G+ products reach 100 m at 4K on DM Ultra cable, and are compatible with HDBaseT equipment.

What is the difference between the HD-TXC, HD-TXCA and HD-TXU transmitters?

The HD-TXC-4KZ-101 extends HDMI with RS-232 and IR. The HD-TXCA-4KZ-101 adds a stereo analogue audio input and an optical output for audio returned from the HD-RXCA-4KZ-101. The HD-TXU-4KZ-111 takes a USB-C DisplayPort source and also extends USB 2.0 and Ethernet, pairing with an HD-RXU-4KZ series receiver. All handle 4K60 4:4:4 with HDR.

Can a wall plate transmitter be powered over the cable?

Yes. Wall plate units such as the HD-TXC-4KZ-101-1G can take power over the link from a surface-mountable DM Essentials receiver or DMPS Essentials switcher, so no power supply is needed at the wall. A PW-2407WUL power pack, sold separately, is needed only when the other end is also a wall plate.

What is the HD-EARC kit used for?

It pairs the HD-TXC-EARC transmitter and HD-RXC-EARC receiver to extend HDMI at up to 4K60 4:4:4 with HDR, plus RS-232 and IR, over one CAT5e or better cable. It also returns audio from the far end, by HDMI eARC up to Dolby Atmos and DTS:X or by optical S/PDIF, and a PW-2420RU power pack is included.

What is the difference between the USB-EXT-2 and the USB-EXT-3?

The USB-EXT-2 extends USB 1.1 and 2.0 at up to 480 Mbps over 100 m of CAT5e or better, with two USB ports at the remote end. The USB-EXT-3 extends USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gbps over 100 m of CAT6a or CAT7, with four USB-A ports and a Gigabit Ethernet pass-through, which suits USB cameras and UC soundbars.

What does an HDMI distribution amplifier do?

It splits one HDMI source to several displays or devices. The HD-DA2-4KZ, HD-DA4-4KZ and HD-DA8-4KZ feed two, four or eight outputs at up to 4K60 4:4:4 with HDR, with selectable HDCP and EDID modes, and need no programming or control system. Each comes with a PW-2407WU power pack. CEC is not passed through.

Why are some Crestron prices shown and others on request?

Where Crestron publishes an advertised price in Ireland, we show it, before VAT and including VAT. For other products Crestron asks dealers to give the price directly, so add them to your quote list and we will send a written quote.
