1Install is a KNX installer and certified KNX Partner working across Ireland from our offices in Dublin and in Cork. We design and programme KNX for self builds, A rated new homes and major renovations, so lighting, heating, ventilation and blinds share one open system that any certified KNX Partner can maintain.
Irish homes are being built tighter and greener than ever, with heat pumps, underfloor heating, ventilation and large areas of glass. KNX was made for exactly this: a single wired bus that links every sensor, actuator and keypad, whoever made them. The KNX Association reports more than 500 manufacturers, over 8,000 certified devices and use in more than 180 countries.
Why a KNX installer suits an Irish self build
- It is wired once, at first fix. The green KNX cable runs beside the electrical circuits while the walls are open, then serves the house for decades.
- Heating that thinks room by room. KNX thermostats and valve actuators manage underfloor heating zones, and heat pumps connect through an interface.
- Shading for big glass. South facing glazing gains heat fast; KNX closes blinds automatically when the sun or wind demands it.
- No lock in. KNX is an open standard programmed in ETS, used by every certified KNX Partner, so you are not tied to one company.
- Nothing hangs on one box. Each device has its own intelligence, so one failed part never stops the house.
KNX installer work we take on
- Lighting control: dimming, scenes, DALI and colour, on keypads from makers such as Gira, Jung, ABB, Schneider Electric and Basalte. More on our lighting control page.
- Heating, cooling and ventilation: underfloor zones, radiators, heat pump and ventilation units.
- Blinds and curtains: motorised, grouped by room or by facade, linked to a weather station. See motorised blinds.
- Sensors: presence, light level, window contacts and leak detection.
- Outdoor: garden lighting, gates and outbuildings on the same system.
- App and voice: Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa through 1Home.
App and voice control through 1Home
1Install is an official 1Home partner. The 1Home Server connects KNX to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant using Matter, and it keeps running locally if the broadband goes down. Read how it works on our 1Home KNX page.
KNX alongside Crestron and Control4
As a Crestron Elite Partner and an accredited Control4 dealer as well as a KNX Partner, we often combine them: KNX runs the lights, heating and shading, and Crestron or Control4 adds touch screens, multi room audio and cinema through an IP interface. Our home automation page explains the choice.
Planning KNX into a new build or renovation
Talk to us before first fix. We mark up the plans, agree cable routes with your electrician and builder, and size the KNX cabinet. In a finished house we can still add KNX in stages, using wireless KNX RF parts where cables cannot reach. A survey or consultation is €440 plus VAT and covers up to 4 hours with an engineer, as set out in our smart home cost guide.
From plans to handover
- Survey or plan review to agree what each room needs.
- Design with drawings and an itemised online proposal.
- First fix of the KNX bus, labelled and tested.
- Second fix and ETS programming by our own engineers.
- Handover and training, with documentation in your client portal.
- Aftercare through 1Install Care, mostly remotely.

Questions we are often asked
What is a certified KNX Partner?
An installer whose team has passed the KNX Association's certified training. It means your system is designed and programmed to the standard in ETS, and any other KNX Partner can understand it.
Is KNX worth it in a new Irish home?
For a self build or an A rated home with a heat pump and underfloor heating, usually yes. Wiring KNX at first fix costs far less than retrofitting, and it controls the heating and shading that matter most in a modern house.
Can KNX be fitted in an existing house?
Yes. We can add KNX floor by floor or system by system, and use wireless KNX RF devices in rooms that are already finished.
Will my KNX system work with Apple Home or Alexa?
Yes, through the 1Home Server, which shows your KNX lights, blinds and heating in Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa.
Am I tied to 1Install once KNX is installed?
No. KNX is open and every certified partner uses ETS. Most clients stay with us through 1Install Care because it is easier, not because they have to.
Do you install KNX outside the main cities?
Yes. Our two offices cover the whole country, with county pages listed above.
