Crestron Collab Engine is a new meeting room unit that puts Microsoft Teams Rooms, wireless sharing for visitors and full Crestron room control inside one piece of hardware. Dublin offices planning new or refreshed meeting rooms should factor it in now, because launch reports put its availability in the first quarter of 2027.
The announcement came on 3 November 2026 in a Crestron press release that calls Collab Engine a scalable platform for Teams Rooms and BYOD. As a Crestron Elite Partner we follow every launch closely, and this one speaks directly to a question Dublin IT managers put to us all the time: how do we make every room work the same way without a pile of boxes behind each screen?
Crestron Collab Engine in plain terms
Picture a typical Dublin boardroom today. A small PC runs Teams, a wireless receiver lets visitors present, a control processor looks after the screen and lights, and a touch panel sits on the table. Collab Engine folds the calling, the content sharing and the room control into a single unit. Crestron describes it as one common hardware platform that can be adapted for anything from a compact huddle room to a large training space.
It carries Microsoft Teams Rooms certification. Underneath, it runs Android on the Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP). The pitch to IT departments is enterprise grade security and management frameworks they already recognise, rather than yet another unfamiliar operating system to patch and track.
Teams Rooms or AirMedia: one device, two personalities
Each Collab Engine can be run in one of two modes:
- Teams Rooms mode: a native Microsoft Teams interface with one touch joining. Staff walk in, tap the booked meeting on the panel and the call starts.
- AirMedia mode: Crestron's wireless presentation technology, built for people bringing their own devices. Users present and hold calls from their own laptops on the platform of their choice.
For a Dublin company that runs entirely on Microsoft, Teams Rooms mode is the natural choice for most rooms. For client suites, shared floors and rooms used by partners on other platforms, AirMedia mode makes more sense. AirMedia is the same Crestron technology found in receivers such as the AM-3200, so staff who already share that way will find it familiar.
The two models
There are two versions. The Collab Engine 4100 and the Collab Engine 4200 both have a Crestron 4 Series control system built in, which removes the need for a separate control processor in most rooms. The 4200 goes a step further with built in DM NVX AV over IP, so it can send and receive video across the building's network. That suits divisible rooms, training suites and offices that already use DM NVX for reception screens or overflow rooms, a setup we described in our post on DM NVX Multiview for business.
Video and sound that follow the meeting
Crestron Intelligent Video and Intelligent Audio are integrated natively. According to Crestron, the camera keeps participants in shot as they move about, and the audio is tuned to each room's shape and acoustics. Older Dublin buildings with tall ceilings and plaster walls, and new builds full of glass, both make room audio difficult, so sound that is set for the actual space is a real gain.
Managing a whole estate from XiO Cloud
Every Collab Engine can be looked after through Crestron XiO Cloud, which gives central deployment, monitoring and management across sites. You can check room status, roll out settings and catch faults early. For a firm with one floor in the city centre and another office in a business park, that single view saves a lot of walking between rooms. We can set up and watch XiO Cloud for you as part of 1Install Care.
Timing: plan now, install in 2027
Launch reports say Collab Engine is scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2027, and Crestron has not released prices. Our advice to Dublin clients:
- If a room works well today, keep it running and plan its move to Collab Engine at the next refresh.
- If you are fitting out a new floor in 2027, design the cabling, power and network with Collab Engine in mind, so rooms are ready when stock arrives.
- Confirm your Microsoft Teams Rooms licences room by room before you set a budget.
- Bring IT in early, because MDEP device management and XiO Cloud both sit on your network.
Why this matters for Crestron users in Dublin
Our founder, Kieran McGuire, holds every Crestron certification, and we design and commission Crestron meeting rooms for Dublin offices. The big shift with Collab Engine is that control, conferencing and sharing now come from one maker and are designed together. That should mean fewer compatibility surprises after firmware updates, and a single support route when something needs attention. Our Teams room installation in Dublin and Crestron installer in Dublin pages set out how we put these rooms together.
Questions we are often asked
When can we buy a Crestron Collab Engine in Dublin?
Availability is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. We can start the room design now so you are ready to install once units arrive.
Do we still need a separate Teams Rooms PC?
Not in a room built around Collab Engine. It is certified for Microsoft Teams Rooms and runs Teams itself when set to Teams Rooms mode.
Which mode should our meeting rooms use?
Rooms used mostly by your own staff on Teams usually suit Teams Rooms mode. Rooms used by visitors on other platforms usually suit AirMedia mode. We help you decide room by room during the survey.
Will our IT team be comfortable with it?
It runs Android through Microsoft's Device Ecosystem Platform, which Crestron says provides enterprise security and familiar IT management, and it is managed centrally in XiO Cloud. Your IT team should still review both as part of the design.
Do we need the 4100 or the 4200?
Both include 4 Series control. Pick the 4200 when the room has to send or receive video over the network with DM NVX; otherwise the 4100 is the usual choice.
What will it cost?
Crestron has not published prices yet. We will price the unit together with installation, programming and support in one quote.
