DIN Rail Lighting for Dublin Homes: Crestron's New Dimmer and Switch Modules Explained

Curved dark timber staircase lit by a fibre optic chandelier, feature lighting that DIN rail lighting modules can dim from one panel

DIN rail lighting puts all of a home's dimmers and switches in one panel, and Crestron has just started shipping two new modules for it: the DIN-4DIMU4 four channel dimmer and the DIN-8SWU8 eight channel switch. For a Dublin house being built, extended or rewired, they make a central lighting panel smaller, better with LED and easier to commission.

On 4 November 2026 Crestron confirmed the modules are shipping, in a question and answer piece with its senior product manager Ben Slivka on the Crestron blog. As a Crestron Elite Partner, we have been waiting for these, and our first look at the Crestron DIN modules on 1 October had to leave the ratings out because Crestron had not published them. Below is what is now known, laid out as a homeowner in Dublin would meet it.

How DIN rail lighting works in a house

Picture the consumer unit, but for lighting. Each lighting circuit in the house runs back to a cabinet, and in that cabinet sit modules about the width of six circuit breakers, clipped side by side on a DIN rail. The modules do the dimming and switching. The keypads on the walls carry only a low voltage control cable, so they can be slim, engraved and placed wherever suits the room.

In a Dublin home, whether a Victorian redbrick or a new build on the edge of the county, the cabinet usually ends up in a utility room or a comms cupboard beside the network rack. Space there is always tight, which is where the new modules help most.

The DIN-4DIMU4 dimmer

This is the module most of your downlights, pendants and wall lights will be wired to. It joins the existing modules in Crestron's range, which you can browse in our Crestron lighting control shop, and Crestron's product page gives these key points:

  • Four dimming channels, each with its own line and neutral, so each can come from a different breaker or phase.
  • Up to 320 W a channel at 230V, and channels can be bridged two, three or four together for up to 1,280 W.
  • Forward and reverse phase dimming, picked automatically for the fitting.
  • No minimum load, with Crestron's caution that some LED fittings still dim best with two or more on a channel.
  • Real time energy monitoring: current, voltage, power and accumulated kWh for each channel.
  • Six DIN module spaces wide, where the current DIN-1DIMU4 takes twelve for four channels.

Slivka explains the reasoning: older dimmer technology was designed around incandescent lamps, and he notes that on dimmers needing a minimum load, some lights, particularly LEDs, may not dim properly or turn fully off without extra loading. For an Irish home moving to LED throughout, that is the part that matters day to day.

The DIN-8SWU8 switch

The switch module handles everything that is on or off rather than dimmed, and it doubles as a motor controller:

  • Eight relay channels at up to 10A each for LED and resistive loads at 230V.
  • Or four bidirectional motor channels, by pairing outputs, for curtain tracks, blinds and screens, with the relays interlocked.
  • Eight digital inputs that accept dry contacts, wet contacts and 12 to 24V AC or DC signals.
  • Mechanically latching relays that keep their state through a power cut.
  • Six DIN module spaces wide; Slivka says it does the work of two DIN-2MC2 motor modules in half the space.

If you are planning curtains or blinds on the same panel, see our motorised blinds in Dublin page and our post on Crestron shades.

What changes on site in a Dublin build

Stage Before With the new modules
Design Different dimmer types for different loads, spare capacity for surprises One universal dimmer for most loads; bridge channels for big ones
Panel build Screw mounting and a cable made up for every module link Toolless mounting, spring terminals, module to module connectors
First power up Wait for the processor and a laptop to test circuits Front panel buttons and lights test and configure each channel
Commissioning Every setting entered in software Settings made on the module sync to Crestron Home OS

The module to module connectors carry Cresnet and the override signal along the rail. Slivka puts the saving at 36 to 60 minutes in a six by eighteen module cabinet, and says a connection that used to take three to five minutes to make now takes one second. For the homeowner the gain is a tidier panel and a smoother handover, rather than a line on the invoice.

Existing Crestron homes in Dublin

Crestron Home 4.12 supports both modules, so a house running Crestron Home 4.12 or later can take them when a panel is extended or an older module fails. If your system is older, our Dublin Crestron upgrade post shows how we move a house to Crestron Home first. A visit to look at your panel and processor is €440 plus VAT for up to 4 hours, and extra time is €110 an hour plus VAT, as on our installation page. We have not seen Irish prices or stock dates published yet, so ask us before you plan around them.

Questions we are often asked

Is DIN rail lighting only for big houses?

No. It suits any home where you want keypads instead of rows of switches and all the electronics in one place. The new modules make the panel smaller, which helps in a typical Dublin semi or terrace.

Will the DIN-4DIMU4 stop my LED downlights flickering?

It is designed for LED, with no minimum load and automatic phase selection, which Crestron says helps achieve flicker free dimming. Crestron still recommends two or more LED fittings per channel, and we test your fittings before they go in.

Can the lights work if the control system is off?

Yes. The digital inputs on both modules control their own outputs by default, so a button or sensor wired to a module works without the processor. Scenes and the app need Crestron Home.

Can I see how much energy my lighting uses?

The DIN-4DIMU4 measures current, voltage, power and kWh on every channel. The DIN-8SWU8 gives an estimate based on the load set for each channel.
